Every step had a reason
Booking a laundry pickup by phone from one of the older laundries in Rehab takes a while. The person reads the price list aloud because the printed one is out of date. You give your address, then give it again because only the building number was kept. Someone calls back ten minutes later to check the order is real. Cash only. The driver rings from the compound gate to ask which gate.
None of these steps is foolish. Each was added for a reason. A run of prank orders, so the call back. A card machine that failed one summer, so cash. A driver who once got lost, so the call from the gate. Every fix made sense on the day it was made.
Added together over the years, they produce something nobody would design on purpose. The laundry never decided to become slow. It got there one good decision at a time.
Meanwhile a newer place down the road carries none of that history. You send one message, it remembers where you live, and the clothes come back. It may not press any better. It simply never had to inherit the old reasons.
That is the uncomfortable part. Every step in the old routine can be defended, and the person on the phone with a week of shirts is not interested in any of the defences.
The older laundry still has its pressing, its name and its regulars. It can wake up tomorrow and decide which steps it would keep if it were starting today. If it does not, someone starting today already has.
