Piece 220Inside

The reply that starts too early

· 1 min read

A customer at a photo studio in Zagazig says the prints look darker than they did on the screen. Watch the man behind the counter and you can usually guess his answer before he gives it. Screens are brighter than paper. Everyone notices this. The file was correct, he checked it.

He may be right. But the speed gives it away. He is not answering her. He is running a reply he has run many times before, and it began before she finished speaking.

Most of us carry a handful of these. What happens when someone criticises our work. What happens when we are handed an unfamiliar tool. What happens in the chest the night before a journey. They feel like reactions, the way we simply are.

They are not fixed. They were learned, often slowly, sometimes for reasons that expired long ago. Some still serve us well, and those are worth keeping.

The rest cost more than we notice. A studio that defends every complaint loses the customers who would have returned if he had asked one question first.

Changing a habit like this for good is hard. Changing it once is within reach. Next time, he could act as though the complaint were information rather than an attack, just to see what follows.

What holds him in place is not his character. It is the belief that this reply is the only one available. The moment he hears himself giving it, it becomes a choice, and a choice can be made differently.
