Flat through the empty fortnight

· 1 min read

From the platform side, the accounts with nobody at home this month give themselves away in one line, and the line is flat.

Same daily amount on the first of August as on the first of March. Straight through the emptiest fortnight of the year in the Gulf, when the customer the account was built for is in another country with the phone on roaming. The click price has moved. The conversion count has moved. The spend has not, to the riyal, because a daily cap set in the winter is still doing exactly what it was told.

Next to it, an account with a person behind it bends. It thinned in July. It is starting to lift now, ahead of the schools, and the lift sits in the evenings, because whoever is still here comes out after dark. The line is untidy. Untidy is what a decision looks like on a chart.

I have watched a great many small accounts through enough summers to read the shape before the name. Flat means nobody has looked since the spring. Flat means the budget was a number agreed once and is no longer a thing anyone is spending. The platform does not know the city has emptied. It only knows the cap, and it will meet the cap every day, in an auction full of other accounts nobody is watching either.

The founder will come back in the second half of the month, open the report, and see a quiet fortnight that cost the same as a busy one. It will be read as the summer. It was the setting.

A budget that does not move when the market moves is not a strategy. It is an absence with a daily cap.
