Harvesting
The healthiest number I ever saw belonged to a business that was about to disappear.
Return on ad spend, climbing week after week. Green everywhere. The kind of chart you screenshot and send to someone.
What the chart could not show was why. They had quietly stopped spending on anything that did not already work. No new audiences, no new creative, no new offers. Every riyal was going to the people most likely to buy anyway, the ones who would have bought without seeing anything at all.
That is not efficiency. That is harvesting.
A ratio improves for two completely different reasons. Either you got better at persuading people, or you stopped trying to persuade anyone new. The first is growth. The second looks identical on the dashboard, right up until you run out of people to harvest.
So I have learned to distrust a rising number on its own. Now I ask a second question before I celebrate anything: what happened to the count of people who had never heard of us? If that fell while efficiency rose, the efficiency is borrowed from next quarter, and next quarter always comes.
Dashboards are honest about what they measure. They are silent about everything they leave out, and the silence reads exactly like good news.
Look at the thing that got quieter.
