Learning starts before the lesson

· 1 min read

Every new skill begins with a few choices that no teacher can make for you. If you never make them, the lessons will not work.

Think of a father in Jeddah who never learnt to swim. The sea is warm most of the year and lessons are easy to find. Time and money are not what stop him. For thirty years he has told everyone he is not a water person, and he believes it.

That belief is the first thing to go. "I am not a numbers person" and "I cannot cook" sound like facts. Usually they are just sentences you have said so often that they feel true.

The rest are promises you make to yourself. You accept being bad at the new thing for a while, even with others watching. You come back after a day that goes badly, instead of taking it as proof that you cannot do it. You behave like someone who can do it before you really can. And you welcome the person you will become, even if that person feels like a stranger today.

None of this happens in the lesson. It happens before you book it.

Without those choices, there is no point in starting.
