Leaving with time to spare

· 1 min read

Some people leave for Cairo airport with an hour more than they need. Others leave on the edge, weaving between lanes, phoning ahead, arriving with their shirt stuck to their back.

Both catch the flight most of the time. Only one of them enjoys the trip.

Spare time is usually described as something the lucky have. It is closer to a habit. It comes from choosing to start earlier, to promise less, to put a day between the work and the moment it is due. Anyone can build that room. Most of us decide not to.

Partly because the rush is useful. A deadline that is about to bite gives us a burst of energy, and some people arrange their whole lives around manufacturing that feeling. The panic stands in for motivation.

Then we let other people manufacture it for us. The banner that says the offer ends tonight. The countdown on a checkout page. The message marked urgent that is not. Much of the pressure we feel during a day was placed there on purpose, by someone who wanted our attention and knew that alarm is the quickest way to get it.

None of this makes the work better. How much gets done, and how good it is, has very little to do with how dramatic it felt. A calm person with room to spare tends to notice more, check more and fix more than a frantic one.

It is possible to do excellent work without gambling everything on the last ten minutes. Leaving early is not caution. It is how the good work gets the attention it needs.
