Piece 342Inside

The ones who know how it works

· 1 min read

A woman in Alexandria with a large following recommends clothes, cafés and skincare to people who trust her taste. For years, like almost everyone doing the same thing, some of those recommendations were paid for and nothing said so.

Now she argues, in public, that every paid post should be clearly marked.

The replies arrive quickly. You of all people. Where was this when the money was coming in? Fix your own page before you lecture the rest of us.

The criticism feels fair, and it misses the point. Who else would know as precisely where the trouble lies? She knows how the arrangements are made, what is asked and what is quietly left out, and how hard it is for one person to refuse when everyone around her accepts. She has been inside the thing she is describing. That is not a reason to dismiss her. It is the reason to listen.

Almost everyone works inside some arrangement that pays them for behaving a certain way. When that arrangement is wrong, the first people to notice are the ones close enough to see it working, and those people are, by definition, part of it. If we only accept criticism from someone who has stayed perfectly clean, we will wait a very long time, because the clean ones rarely understand the problem well enough to name it.

This is how things stay the same. Not through anyone defending them, but through a quiet agreement that whoever speaks up will be called a hypocrite first. Most people, sensibly, decide to say nothing.

The person who has benefited and still says it is broken is not the weakest messenger. Often she is the only one who could have said it at all.
