Make smaller promises and beat them

· 1 min read

Falling a little behind gets worse by itself. Being a little ahead gets easier by itself, and which one you end up in usually depends on how much you promised.

When you are behind, every shortcut to catch up costs you later. You rush the work and send an apology. Then you push the next job back to save this one, and now that job is late too.

When you are ahead, the spare time is yours. You can plan, catch a mistake before anyone sees it, and do the work properly.

Picture two women in Riyadh who sew abayas to order before Eid. One said yes to everyone and promised every abaya by the twenty-seventh of Ramadan. One slip on the first order made every order after it late, and now she spends more time answering messages than sewing. The other took fewer orders, promised the same date, and is handing hers over two days early.

They are equally good at the work. The difference was settled weeks earlier, on the day each of them decided how much to say yes to.

That choice is yours too. Whatever you sell, you set the size of the promise. Make it a little smaller than what you can do, then beat it, and people will trust you and come back.

People forget how big the promise was. They remember that you beat it.
