Spend less, grow
The account grew when the budget was cut. I have seen it enough times now that I no longer treat it as a surprise, but the first time I could not explain it, and the explanation is worth having.
Here is what had been happening. The budget was set monthly, the platform was told to spend it, and it did, evenly, every day, whether or not the day deserved it. Sunday nights when nobody was buying got the same money as Wednesday lunchtimes when everyone was. The auction was expensive in the hours that mattered and cheap in the hours that did not, and the spend was flat across both. Pacing was an administrative task. Someone set it in January and nobody looked again.
Then the budget was cut, and the person running the account was forced to choose. Which hours. Which days. Which audiences got the money and which got nothing. The cut made every riyal have to argue for its place, and it turned out that a good share of them had never had an argument.
Fewer riyals, better placed, and the result went up.
Nobody had done anything clever. They had stopped doing something lazy, and the laziness had been hidden by the size of the budget. A big budget forgives a great deal, which is precisely why it teaches nothing.
The lesson I took is not "spend less". It is that pacing is a lever, not a setting. Where the money lands inside the week is a decision with as much weight as how much money there is, and it is the decision almost nobody in the room is making, because the platform makes it for them, evenly, which is to say badly.
The budget cut was not the strategy. It was the moment someone was finally forced to have one.
