Start with the shirt

· 1 min read

A young founder in Amman starts a dry-cleaning collection service, and the first thing he writes is the mission. It is to transform how the Levant cares for its clothes.

It is a fine sentence. It is also a very comfortable place to hide.

A mission that large cannot be checked. Any week can be described as progress towards it. He can redesign the logo, plan a second city and talk about the region, and feel busy for a year without ever finding out whether anyone wants their shirts collected.

Compare a smaller sentence. Collect shirts from any flat in Abdoun before nine, return them pressed the next evening, and never lose a button. That sentence is uncomfortable, because it can fail on Tuesday. A shirt comes back late, or creased, or not at all, and he knows at once.

That is exactly why it is useful. A specific promise gives him something to get right, and getting it right tells him whether there is a business. If the neighbourhood keeps calling every week, the bigger story can be written later, and it will be true.

The grand version is not wrong to want. Every business needs a direction. But a direction is not a goal, and the vaguer the goal, the longer it lets someone put off the test.

Most of the businesses that did end up changing something large began by doing one plain thing well enough that people switched to them.

The ambition comes after the shirt arrives on time. It does not come instead of it.
