Teach yourself

· 1 min read

A woman in Luxor has taught herself to edit video in the evenings.

There was no course near her and no one in the family who could show her. So she watched strangers explain it, paused, tried, failed, watched again. Within a few months she was cutting short films for a cousin's tour business, then for a shop near the corniche, then for anyone who asked.

For most of history, that path was closed to almost everyone. Knowledge lived in institutions, in apprenticeships, in the heads of people you had to be introduced to. If you wanted to learn something, you first had to be let in. The real cost of learning was access.

That cost has nearly vanished. Almost any skill a person might want, from bookkeeping to welding, from writing a better product description to reading a profit and loss statement, now has someone patiently explaining it, for free, at whatever hour suits. The bar to entry is a phone and an internet connection.

What has not vanished is the other cost: the hours, the confusion, the embarrassment of being a beginner again, the discipline to keep going when nobody is checking. No teacher sets the homework. No one notices if it stops.

That is the shift. The question used to be whether anyone would teach you. Now it is only whether you will bother to learn.

The door has been open for a while. Plenty of people are still standing outside it, waiting to be invited in.
