The afternoons are not unlimited

· 1 min read

A student in Al Ain is in her final year. Her afternoons feel endless. There is always another series to start, another invitation, another hour of scrolling, and somewhere in the background a portfolio she means to build and a course she keeps meaning to begin.

It is easy to live as if the day has no edges. As if every option can be taken, one after another, and the good ones will still be waiting whenever we get round to them.

They will not. Each of us has a limited supply. A certain number of afternoons, a certain amount of money, a handful of real openings in a year when someone is willing to take a chance on us. Every choice spends some of it, including the choice to drift.

I do not think seeing it this way makes life grim. It makes it clearer. Once you know the supply runs out, you stop treating each hour as free and start asking what it is worth. You might still give an evening to something light. But you give it on purpose, the way you would choose carefully what to buy with the last of the month's money.

The student who notices this does not stop seeing her friends. She simply says yes to fewer things she does not care about, and the portfolio starts to exist.

Taking whatever comes next rarely brings the most joy, or does the most good. Choosing does.

So the useful question each morning is not what there is to do. There is always too much. It is what today's share is going to be spent on.
