The ask that arrives as an offer

· 1 min read

A young woman in Manama sells embroidered cushion covers from her home. She has heard the advice everyone hears: if you never ask, you never get. So she sends messages to accounts with large followings, asking them to share her work.

Almost nobody replies. She takes the silence as proof that she needs to ask more.

The advice is not wrong, exactly. But followed far enough, it turns a person into a nuisance. Each of her messages is about what she needs. The person receiving it reads one more request in a day full of requests, and scrolls on.

There is another kind of message, and it begins with where the other person is trying to go. Someone who posts about homes needs a steady supply of new things to show, ideally made by people with a story. A small boutique wants pieces nobody else stocks. A photographer building a portfolio needs objects that look beautiful in morning light. Each has a goal, and she might genuinely be useful to it.

That message is harder to write. She has to know the other person's work. She has to have something worth offering in the first place: a skill, an eye, a record of delivering on time. Becoming someone whose offer is worth reading takes far longer than sending fifty requests.

But it changes the shape of the exchange. She is no longer asking a stranger to spend their standing on her. She is bringing them a way to reach somewhere they were already heading.

The ask that works is the one that arrives as an offer.
