The card that chose the shop

· 1 min read

A gift card is a present with the present taken out.

An aunt in a Dammam mall does not know what her nephew wants for his birthday, so she stands at a counter and buys a card for a round amount from a shop she has heard of. It is quick, and it looks generous in the envelope.

Look at what the card actually decides. Not the thing. Not the size, the colour, or the moment of opening something that was picked for you. It decides only the shop. The one choice the giver made is the one that boxes him in.

Then he spends it. What he wants costs a little more than the card, so he adds his own money. Or nothing there is quite right, and the card sits in a drawer until it lapses, which the shop counts as its best kind of sale.

A whole family can hand these round to each other and call it a tradition. Money circles the room, comes out smaller, and leads each person back to a till they did not pick.

The point of a gift was always the thinking. Somebody held you in mind long enough to guess. The card lets them skip that and still feel they did it.

A better version is not hard. Choose the thing. Wrap it, or describe it on a note, and tell him plainly that he can swap it for anything else, or for the money, with no awkwardness at all. He gets the guess and the freedom, and the guess is what he remembers.

Or put cash in a nice envelope. It is honest, and it sends nobody to a shop they did not choose.
