Piece 475Inside
The edit you make each day
Any book about a life leaves out nearly all of it. Most of the days, most of the conversations, most of the ordinary afternoons never make it in. Someone had to decide what did.
We do the same thing to ourselves, constantly, and mostly without noticing.
Every evening the mind sorts the day. One sharp remark gets replayed four times on the drive home. A kind message gets read once and forgotten. A small setback becomes the headline; a small win is filed somewhere it will not be found again. The camera roll on a phone tells a happier version than the one we narrate in our heads, because it only kept the moments we chose to raise it for.
Over months, the choices add up. The story we keep repeating about ourselves, the unlucky one, the one who always has to fight for it, the one people overlook, becomes the lens through which the next day is read. Then it becomes who we are.
The events were not different. The edit was.
Two people can live through the same year and come out of it telling completely different stories. Both will be true, and each will shape what that person dares to try next.
Which leaves a question worth sitting with. Somebody is choosing what makes the final cut of your story. Is it you, or is it habit?
