Too important to work

· 1 min read

Every year around the big seasons, the most expensive advertising in the Gulf arrives on cue. A famous face. A lavish set. A song made for the occasion. A message so carefully agreed that nobody could possibly object to it.

And a week later, most people could not tell you what it was for.

It is not that the people behind it lacked talent. It is that the stakes were too high to let talent do anything. When a project must become a hit, everyone wants a say in it, and every say removes a little risk. The unusual idea goes first, because it might not land. The odd casting goes next. The joke that only half the audience would get is cut, along with the half that would have loved it. What remains is safe, polished and forgettable.

That is the trap. The bigger the bet, the harder we try to insure it, and the insurance is paid in exactly the things that make work travel: surprise, specificity, a point of view someone might disagree with. Every extra layer of protection is another layer between the idea and the person it was meant to reach.

A guarantee is the one thing creative work cannot offer, and demanding one is the surest way to get nothing worth guaranteeing.

Trying to force a thing to be enormous is one of the more reliable ways to make it shrink.
