Piece 013Inside

The first nine buyers

· 1 min read

A young man in Damanhour starts selling houseplants from his balcony. Small pots, hardy plants, a page online and a delivery bag on the back of his motorbike. In the first month, nine people buy.

His first instinct is the common one. Post more. Print flyers. Ask every friend to share. If nine bought, surely ninety are out there waiting to hear about it.

They are not waiting. Most people do not want to be the first to trust a stranger with a living thing that might die on their windowsill. They would rather someone else went first and reported back. No amount of volume changes that, because the problem was never that they had not heard.

The only work that changes it is the work done with the nine. Learning which of them come back, and why. Noticing that they care less about rare varieties and more about a plant that survives a hot flat and a forgetful owner. Changing the pots, the advice card, the delivery day. Getting things wrong quickly and without drama, so that each miss shows him one more thing his buyers did not want.

Every other part of the business can be borrowed or bought: the pots, the soil, the photographs, the delivery. Turning a handful of strangers into people who are glad they bought is the one job nobody can do for him.

If he does it well, growth arrives by one of two roads. The nine bring their friends, because a plant that thrives on a balcony is seen by every visitor. Or the nine give him enough proof, and enough confidence, to go after a different group, offices perhaps, who want something else entirely.

Either way, the next buyer does not come because he shouted. It comes because the last buyer gave them a reason.
