The hour it gives back

· 1 min read

The new writing tools are good enough now to draft the email, summarise the report and tidy the spreadsheet. Plenty of people are still deciding whether to let them.

That decision is going to be made either way. If you do not hand the routine parts of your job to the machine, someone who pays for your time will notice that it could, and will do the handing for you. It is better to be the one who chose.

But that is only the first half, and it is the half everyone talks about.

The second half is what happens to the hour that comes back. Most people spend it the way water fills a gap: with more of the same. More emails, faster. More reports, shorter. The work gets cheaper, and so does the person doing it.

The other option is harder and slower to show results. Spend the hour on the parts of the job no tool can reach. Sitting with the customer who is about to leave and asking why. Deciding which of the options is worth defending, and then defending it. Noticing that the question everyone is answering is the wrong one. Being trusted enough that people bring you the problem before it becomes one.

None of that fits in a prompt. All of it is what people were hoping to get when they hired a person in the first place.

The tools will keep getting better at the first kind of work. That is the point of them. What is still yours is the time they return, and whether, a year from now, they have made you faster or made you necessary.
