The smoke is not a flaw

· 1 min read

Some improvements nobody argues with. A cleaner glass. Shade that actually covers the table. A chair whose legs are all the same length. Whatever the place and whoever the guest, these are welcome, and anyone unsure where to put their effort can always put it there.

The roadside tea stops on the climb towards Taif teach the other half of the lesson.

The tea arrives too sweet and faintly smoky, poured from a kettle that has sat on the coals since the afternoon. The seats are plastic, and the view is the reason anyone pulled over. The wait is long, and nobody minds, because it is spent looking at the mountains with the window down and the engine off.

Imagine fixing it. Filtered water, a menu board, a quicker machine, cushioned chairs, an awning that hides the ridge. Every change on its own sounds like progress. Together they produce a place that is more comfortable and less worth the drive.

The people who stop there are not asking for efficiency. They chose the slowness, the smoke and the slight disorder, the way someone buys a heavy, impractical thing precisely because it is heavy and impractical. To them, the roughness is the product.

That is the harder judgement. Knowing which improvements everyone wants is easy, and worth doing. Knowing which ones your particular guests would quietly resent takes attention, because nobody will tell you. They will simply drive a little further up the road next time.

So when I look at anything people love, I try to sort what is broken for everyone from what only looks broken to an outsider.

Not everything that can be improved is waiting to be.
