Piece 440Market

The listing was filler before the machine

· 1 min read

Small sellers have a new worry. The writing tools that arrived recently can produce a product listing in a second, a decent one, and suddenly every shop online sounds alike.

Picture a woman in Amman who knits baby blankets at home and sells them online. Her question would be simple: why would anyone pay a person to write about wool now?

It is a fair worry. But look at what the machine is replacing. Scroll any marketplace and read the listings written by hand before any of this existed. Premium quality. Soft and comfortable. Perfect gift for any occasion. Fast delivery. These were not written by people pouring themselves into the work. They were written by people filling a box because a box needed filling.

Nobody forced that. The rush did, and the price pressure, and the feeling that nobody reads the description anyway. Long before software could do it, plenty of us had already agreed to write like software.

So the tool did not lower the bar. It showed where the bar had been sitting all along, and it took the cheap end of the work, the end that was never really anyone's best.

What remains is the part only she can do. Who taught her the stitch. Why this wool and not the cheaper one. What the blanket looks like after its fortieth wash, because she has washed one forty times to find out. That sentence was always available to her. It just was not required.

Now it is. The minimum has moved up, and the space above it, the space that was always hers, is the only space left worth writing in.
