Piece 441Craft

Who you stand next to when the offer comes

· 1 min read

Every few weeks a new scheme travels through the extended family. A cousin in Alexandria forwards it with three exclamation marks. Double your savings in ninety days. A trading account that cannot lose. A friend of a friend who already bought a car with it.

It is tempting to think these work on foolish people. Mostly they do not. They work on people in particular moods.

The bored ones, first. When life is steady and nothing moves, a little risk feels like being awake again.

Then the ones who already have some and want more, quickly, without the slow part. That appetite does not shrink as you gain. It tends to grow with you.

And the ones who have lost faith in the ordinary road. If saving, studying and turning up have not worked, a promise that skips all of it sounds less like a con and more like the only door left open.

Part of what makes it hard is that real breakthroughs also sound unbelievable at first. Every genuinely new thing arrives looking a little like a trick. So the scheme borrows the costume of progress, and from the inside the two are not easy to tell apart.

What helps is rarely a smarter individual. It is the people around them. A household where someone says, calmly, that this is not how money works. Friends who keep their word, who are not embarrassed by slow results, who remember the uncle who lost the flat.

We choose a lot of those people. Which uncle we ask before we sign. Which conversations we keep turning up to. Which voices we pass on to our children.

The shortcut always finds you. Whether you take it depends heavily on who is standing next to you when it does.
