The move and the boy

· 1 min read

A mother in Al Ain has two hard things on her list this autumn.

The first is moving house. It is exhausting, and parts of it she would rather not look at, like deciding which of her late father's things go into storage. But it has an answer. Break it into rooms, then boxes, then afternoons, and with enough stubbornness it gets done. Hard, but finite.

The second is her fourteen-year-old and his phone. She has tried a curfew, then a basket by the door, then a deal involving weekends. Each rule worked for a week. Then he changed, his friends changed, the games changed, and the rule was answering a question nobody was asking any more.

These are not the same kind of problem, and treating them as if they were is where most of her frustration comes from.

The move is complicated. It stays still while she works on it. The boy is complex. He is part of a system that responds to every push, and her fix becomes one more thing the system reacts to. There is no final answer waiting at the end.

The first step with something complex is simply to call it that. Once she stops expecting a solution, each failed rule stops feeling like a personal defeat.

The second is not to shrink it to a single symptom. The phone is not the whole story. Sleep, friends, boredom and homework all sit in the same web, and blaming one strand does not help.

And then, rather than turning away because it cannot be solved, she can carve off one small piece that can. Phones out of the kitchen at dinner, for this month. Watch what happens. Learn from it. Pick the next piece.

Complicated problems reward effort. Complex ones reward attention, again and again, for as long as you are inside them.
