When the numbers arrive somewhere new

· 1 min read

For years, the man who runs a youth football side in Doha has judged his players by eye. Who works hard, who drifts, who is fitter than he looks. He was good at it, or believed he was, and nobody could say otherwise.

Some kinds of work have always come with a clear verdict. The pipe leaks or it does not. The engine turns over or it stays silent. People who like that clarity tend to end up in those trades. People who prefer feel and interpretation drift towards work where the result is harder to pin down.

Lately, numbers are turning up in places they never used to reach. A few small trackers sewn into training tops, and suddenly there is a figure for how far each boy ran, how often he sprinted, how fast he tired. The quiet one the trainer always thought lazy covers more ground than anyone. The boy he loves for his effort walks for long stretches.

His first reaction is not curiosity. It is suspicion. The device must be wrong. It cannot see what he sees. Numbers miss the point of the game.

Some of that may be fair. Mostly, though, he is doing what most of us do when measurement shows up somewhere nobody expected it: doubting it because it is unfamiliar, not because it is unhelpful.

The same thing happens to the shopkeeper reading his first proper sales report, or the small seller finding out which posts actually brought anyone to buy. The figure lands, and the instinct is to argue with it.

A new number is not always right. But being new is not the same as being wrong.
