The note in the frame

· 1 min read

Behind the counter of a key-cutting stall in Al Ain hangs a small frame. Inside it is the first banknote a customer ever paid him with, and a date written underneath in pen.

Every year on that date, he tells the story to whoever is waiting. How he left a steady job. How he borrowed money for the machine. How the first week brought almost nobody, and he opened the next morning anyway.

The calendar is full of days like that, if you look. The day someone signed for a space they could not quite afford. The day someone published a first piece of work with their own name on it, offered help to a neighbour they hardly knew, or said yes to an odd proposal from a stranger. On each of them, somebody did something that might not have worked, and did it where others could see.

We like to mark those days. A cake, a post, a framed note, a story retold to the queue.

That is worth doing. But it misses what the day actually was. The thing being remembered did not happen to someone. It was a choice, made by a person full of doubt, to go first.

The only celebration that matches it is another one like it. A fresh risk, taken on the same date: a call made, a draft put out, a hand offered.

The note in the frame is a record of a chance taken. The way to honour it is to take the next one.
