The voice nobody else can supply

· 1 min read

A freelance voice-over artist in Dubai is very good at one thing. Give her a script and a quiet room, and she will find the voice it needs within a few takes.

She is also, by her own choice, the person who edits the audio, builds and repairs her website, designs the invoices, chases late payments, files the paperwork and answers every enquiry within the hour. She does all of these slowly, and they eat the mornings when her voice is at its best.

None of this is unusual. Working alone tends to come with the belief that doing it all yourself is part of the job. Paying someone else feels like an admission, or an extravagance.

The arithmetic is old and simple. The sound editor who rents a desk in her shared workspace can clean a recording in a fraction of the time it takes her. She can record a script in a fraction of the time it would take him, and far better. If each does their own work and pays the other for theirs, both end the week with more done and more earned. Money in the middle changes nothing: she records for a client, then spends part of the fee buying back the hours she was losing to the website.

What she loses by not trading is not only time. It is the part of her that is hardest to replace. The energy that goes into wrestling with invoices does not go into the voice, and the voice is the only thing in the whole operation that nobody else could provide.

Do everything yourself, and the one thing only you can do gets whatever is left.
