The page of the same letter

· 1 min read

In a calligraphy class in Sharjah, the students spend their first months writing the same few letters, over and over, on cheap paper.

Nobody films that. What gets filmed, and shared, is the finished panel: a single line of script flowing across a sheet, gold on deep blue, the pen lifting at exactly the right moment. It looks like a gift. People watch it and assume the hard part is that last flourish.

The last flourish is hard. It is the part that takes nerve, the part where one slip ruins a week. But it only exists on top of everything that came before it. Without the thousands of plain letters, there is nothing for the flourish to finish. The difficulty at the end is not separate from the long, dull stretch. It is what the long, dull stretch earns.

The clips leave all of that out, because a page of identical letters does not make anyone stop scrolling. So a newcomer arrives expecting the flourish, finds a page of the same letter, and many of them are gone by the second month.

The ones who stay are not always the most gifted. They are the ones who come back on Tuesday and fill another page. And then another. It is not glamorous, and nobody claps.

But they are the only people in the room who will ever find out how hard the ending really is. Everyone else stopped long before they got close enough to be frightened by it.
