When the help is the work

· 1 min read

A woman in Muscat is planning her father's seventieth birthday dinner, and every cousin in the family has asked how they can help.

She has said no to all of them. It is faster to do it herself. She knows which restaurant, which room, which dishes he likes and which uncle must not sit next to which. Explaining all that to someone else would take longer than booking it.

For a list of jobs, she is right. Phoning to confirm the table, collecting the cake, sending the time to the family group: these are quicker done than handed over, and a helper mostly adds a step.

But that is not really what she is trying to make. What she wants is for her father to sit at the head of a table and feel, for one evening, how much he has meant to all of them. That is not a list of jobs. It is a change she is trying to bring about in a room full of people, and she cannot do it alone, however organised she is.

The cousin who offered to help knows a story about him from the village that nobody else remembers. The younger brother could bring the old friend from his first job. The aunt has the photographs. None of that is on her list, because she could not have thought of it. Only they could.

When the work is a set of tasks, help slows it down. When the work is a change in how people feel, the help is the work. Asking them in is not a distraction from the planning. It is most of it.
