Where the voice comes from

· 1 min read

A voice teacher in Minya spends the first weeks with a new student on something the student did not come for. Not songs. Not the high note. Breathing, low in the body, from the belly and the back, until it happens without thinking.

Students find it dull. They want to work on what the audience notices: the face, the gestures, the run of notes at the end of a line. The teacher keeps sending them back down. The sound that fills a room comes from the largest muscles in the body, not from the throat. A singer who pushes from the throat sounds thin and tires quickly. A singer who breathes properly hardly seems to be trying.

A small business works the same way, and it is just as unglamorous. The parts people see are the launch, the clever post, the packaging everyone photographs. The parts that carry the weight are underneath: whether the cash comes in before it has to go out, whether the people who bought once come back, whether the supplier will still deliver to you when you are small and late.

Those are the large muscles. They are slow to train and nobody claps for them. But every flourish on top borrows its strength from them, and a flourish with nothing underneath sounds like the singer straining from the throat: loud for a moment, then gone.

The pull is always towards practising the visible part, and the more tempting it is, the more the hidden part matters. Get the breathing right first. The rest comes from there.
