Piece 241Market

Which part comes first

· 1 min read

Someone in Manama has designed a board game and wants to sell it online. There is an easy part and a hard part, and the order she takes them in decides what kind of risk she is managing.

The easy part is pleasant. A name, a box design, a few good photographs, a page that looks finished. It produces visible progress every evening.

The hard part is finding out whether strangers will pay her price. Not friends, not her sister. People who owe her nothing.

If what she wants is to avoid wasting a year, the hard part goes first. Make a small batch, put it in front of strangers with a price on it, and see. If nobody buys, she has lost a month and some cardboard, not a year and her savings. Everything else can wait until the one fact that matters is known.

But there is another kind of maker, and another kind of risk. Some people will not survive the difficult stretch unless they arrive at it already committed. For them the easy wins are not vanity. The name on the box, the first page, the first compliment from a cousin all change how she sees herself. She becomes someone who sells games. By the time the cold test comes, she has put in too much, of money and of identity, to walk away at the first silence. Sunk costs are usually a trap. Here they are fuel.

Neither order is wrong. They answer different questions.

Put the difficulty up front when you need to know. Save it for the end when you need the nerve to get through it. Most people choose an order out of habit and never ask which of the two problems they are actually solving.
