AI shopping just became measurable
For two years, AI shopping has been a rumour in your analytics. People asked an assistant what to buy, the assistant answered, and somewhere downstream a sale happened that your dashboard credited to "direct." You could feel the channel. You could not see it.
That changed this week. Google began reporting AI-specific metrics for merchants, impressions, clicks, and engagement from its AI shopping experiences, so you can now measure how often your products appear inside AI-assisted journeys. Industry tracking also puts ads on nearly a third of commercial AI searches, and a new crop of tools has emerged to monitor what the assistants actually recommend.
Here is the pattern worth remembering: budgets follow measurement. The moment a channel becomes reportable, it becomes managed, compared, and funded. AI shopping just crossed that line. Within a few quarters, "how do we show up when the machine is asked?" stops being a philosophical question and becomes a line on someone's weekly report.
Three moves for this week:
- Baseline it. Pull the new AI metrics and record where you stand before you change anything. You cannot claim growth from a channel you never measured.
- Treat your product feed as creative. Titles, attributes, structured data, reviews. That is what the machine reads. It deserves the same iteration discipline as your ads.
- Watch the picks. Note which of your SKUs the assistants surface and which they skip, then ask what the surfaced ones have in common. That gap is your roadmap.
The brands that win new channels are rarely the biggest. They are the ones who showed up while everyone else was still calling it a rumour.
