Piece 020Inside

Full on the first night

· 1 min read

A new evening English class opens in Nasr City, and on its first night every seat is taken. A free trial session, a bright banner, a teacher with a good laugh.

By the fifth week, a handful are left.

A few streets away, a retired teacher runs a small class from her flat. She has never had a full room of anything. But the students who find her stay for two years, send their younger siblings, and come back to visit after they move away.

These are two different qualities, and it is a mistake to treat them as one. Some things pull people in. They are good at the first visit: the opening, the headline, the free sample, the reason to try. Other things hold people. They become part of someone's week, then part of their life, and the question of leaving never really comes up.

The first quality gets noticed because it is visible. A crowd is easy to point at. The second is quiet and slow, and it rarely makes anyone look clever in the first month.

Occasionally something has both. That is rare enough to be worth noticing when it happens. Far more often a project has only one, and its owners keep trying to fix it with more of the quality it already has: another promotion for the class that cannot keep its students, another round of polish for the class nobody has heard of.

And very often a project has neither, and the full room on the first night hid that for a while.

It helps to know which one you are building before deciding what to do next.
