The laundry with the balloon arch
Two small laundries open in the same week in Dokki.
The first does what openings usually do. A balloon arch over the door. A speaker playing music onto the pavement. A young man handing out flyers with a discount on the first visit. A lit sign wider than the shop itself. It costs a lot, it is easy to arrange, and everyone involved can see the money at work.
The second spends almost nothing on its opening. Its owner spent time instead, on one decision about what the laundry is for. Shirts back the same evening if they arrive before ten. Anything that needed a button or a stitch comes back mended, with a small note saying so. Everything folded the way a careful person at home would fold it. The whole idea fits on a card by the till, and it is true every single day.
Spectacle is attractive because it is reassuring. It can be bought, handed to someone else and ticked off. Nobody is blamed for a balloon arch. It also tends to produce the average, because the average is what safe money buys.
The thinking is harder. It cannot be hired out cheaply, it does not photograph well, and it takes longer than anyone wants. But it is far cheaper than the balloons, and it is still working after the music stops.
This holds well beyond laundries. A launch video with drones and no idea. A shop with expensive fixtures and nothing to say. A pack with five finishes and no reason to pick it up. Each time, the money went to the show because the show felt safer than the thinking.
Given the choice, pay for the thinking. It is usually the smaller bill.
