What survives February

· 1 min read

Every January plan has a target, and by February most of them have quietly become a wish.

I have written enough of them to know why. A target is a statement about an outcome, and outcomes are decided by things outside the room: a competitor, a currency, a platform changing its rules, a week where nobody could work. When the world moves, the target stops describing anything real. So people stop looking at it. Not out of weakness. Out of accuracy.

What survives February is not the number. It is whatever was set up to happen anyway.

The weekly review that is in the diary whether the week was good or bad. The creative refresh that happens on the first Sunday of the month regardless of whether the old creative is tired yet. The one test running at all times, because the rule is that one is always running. The half-hour on Thursday spent looking at the accounts that went quiet.

None of these is a goal. None of them promises an outcome. That is exactly why they survive. A habit does not become wrong when the world changes. It just keeps producing information, and information is what you need most in the month when the plan stopped describing reality.

I write this from a small daily practice of my own. There is no target on it. There is a slot every morning and a rule that something goes out. Some of what goes out is better than the rest. The habit does not care, and because it does not care, it is still here.

The target goes in the deck because the board needs one. The thing worth building is whatever will still be running when the target has been forgotten.

The target is what you hoped. The system is what you actually did.
